Paint does not hide a wall’s faults. Under evening light raking across a wall, it points at them.
Nail pops
Small round bumps in a line up a wall. The fixing has worked loose as the timber behind it dried and moved. They need refixing rather than just filling, or they come back.
Hairline cracks
Usually at corners and above doorways, and usually normal settlement. They get taped rather than just filled, because filler alone will crack again along the same line.
When a crack is worth worrying about
Wider than a pencil line, running diagonally from a corner, or with one side sitting proud of the other. That is movement rather than settlement, and it wants looking at before anyone paints.
Holes
Anything smaller than a fist is a patch. Larger than that gets a cut-in piece of board, taped and floated — which takes a day of drying between coats of compound.
