Sun and humidity work on an exterior from opposite directions. Ultraviolet light breaks the binder down from above, so the surface chalks and fades. Moisture works from behind, getting in through failed caulk and bare end grain, then pushing the film off from underneath. The elevations taking the most afternoon sun almost always fail years before the shaded ones do.
That is why an exterior job is mostly preparation. Washing removes the chalk and mildew that nothing will bond to. Scraping and sanding takes the film back to an edge that is still holding. Bare wood gets primed, because paint straight onto raw exterior timber is a coat with a short future. Failed caulk lines are cut out and replaced rather than painted over.

How often does a house need repainting in Georgia?
