Guards are sold as the end of gutter cleaning. Under Georgia pines they are not, and anyone who tells you otherwise has not maintained one.
What they stop
Leaves. Genuinely, and well. A guard keeps a gutter from packing solid with oak and maple in November, which is the failure that causes overflow.
What they do not stop
Pine needles, which are thin enough to pass through most mesh and then sit on top of the guard forming a mat. Shingle grit and roof debris do the same over time.
What that means here
Cherokee County is pine country. A guard here turns a twice-yearly clean into a once-yearly one — useful, but not the end of it, and the cleaning that remains is slightly more awkward because the guard has to come off.
When they are clearly worth it
A two-storey house, a steep roof, or anywhere getting up there is genuinely difficult. The saving is not the cleaning cost — it is the number of times someone needs to be on a ladder.
The honest answer
They help. They are not maintenance-free, and any product sold as maintenance-free in a pine county is being oversold.
