Gutter Repair or Replacement? How to Tell

Clearing leaves from a gutter by hand from a ladder

Gutter repair or replacement is nearly always answered by the board behind the gutter, not the gutter itself.

Aluminium gutters outlast most things bolted to a house. What fails is the fascia they are screwed to, and once that has gone soft nothing you do to the gutter will hold.

Signs a repair will hold

A joint that has opened and can be resealed. A bracket that has pulled loose from sound timber. A downspout that has come away at the top. A section that has been dented. All of these are afternoon jobs.

Signs it will not

A gutter that has begun to sag along a run, water marks running down the siding behind it, or a fascia board that gives when pressed. At that point the fixings have nothing to bite into, and rehanging the same gutter buys a season.

Why it got that far

Because blocked gutters do not fail at the front. Water goes over the back edge, behind the gutter, and onto the fascia — so the damage happens where nobody looks until the gutter is visibly hanging.

Gutter cleaning is the cheap way to avoid the expensive version. Finished work is on our Facebook page.
