People leave ceilings out to save money and then look up. Fresh walls make an old ceiling look grey in a way it never did before.
When it has to be done
If the walls are changing colour significantly, the ceiling will read as dirty against them. Same if there is any staining, or if the ceiling has never been painted since the house was built.
When it does not
A ceiling repainted in the last few years, in a room where the wall colour is barely changing, can stay. We will say so.
Stains need blocking, not covering
Water marks bleed through ordinary paint no matter how many coats go on. They need a stain-blocking primer first — and the leak that caused them needs finding, which is not a painting job.
Textured ceilings
Popcorn and knockdown textures hold dust and drink paint. They take longer and use more material, and they cannot be rolled at the speed a flat ceiling can.
The cost of adding it
Less than you would think when done at the same time — the room is already masked and the floors already covered. Coming back later means setting all of that up twice.
