A screened porch in Georgia is less about insects than about how many evenings the porch actually gets used.
An open porch is pleasant for about half the year here. Screening it does not extend the seasons at either end so much as make the middle of them bearable, which is where most porch time would otherwise be lost.
What screening changes
Usable evenings, obviously. But also cleaning: a screened porch collects far less debris, so the floor and furniture stay usable rather than needing a sweep before every use.
Against that, screens need occasional repair, and a screened porch is darker inside — which matters more than people expect on a north-facing elevation.
When the structure decides for you
Screening needs something to attach to. A porch with substantial posts and a solid roof structure takes it easily. One built as an open platform with slender columns may need framing added first, and that changes the cost more than the screens do.
The cheaper middle ground
Screening one end rather than the whole porch. It keeps the open aspect where you want it and gives somewhere usable in August, and it is a fraction of the full job.
