Walk around almost any house in Cherokee County and one side will look years older than the rest. It is not a coincidence and it is not bad paint — it is which way that wall faces.

Two forces, opposite directions
Ultraviolet light breaks down the binder that holds a coating together. That happens from the outside in, and it shows as chalking — a fine powder that comes off on your hand — and as colour that has gone flat.
Moisture works the other way. It gets in through failed caulk, through bare end grain at the bottom of trim, and through anywhere the film has already opened. Then it pushes the coating off from underneath. That shows as peeling in sheets rather than fading.
The south and west elevations get the most hours of direct sun and the hottest part of the afternoon. They fail first, and they fail harder.
What to look for, side by side
Run a hand over the siding — powder on your palm is chalking
Compare the same colour on the north and south walls
Check caulk lines around windows on the sunny side
Look at the bottom edge of trim boards and corner boards
Soffits and fascia, which nobody checks until they flake
You do not always have to do the whole house
If the north and east elevations still have a sound film and the south side is chalking, treating the failing sides brings the house back and buys the rest several more years. It is a smaller job, and it is often the right one.
The catch is colour. A repainted wall next to a faded one will not match even in the same product, because the old side has lost pigment. On a house with strong colour that difference is visible; on a soft neutral it usually is not. We will tell you honestly which one yours is.
Georgia makes it faster
Strong sun and high humidity together are harder on a coating than either alone. That is why exterior paint here rarely reaches the number of years printed on the tin — those figures assume general conditions, and a Georgia summer is not general conditions.
